Jonathan Higgins
Jonathan Higgins, a 6-foot-1, 200-pound forward, played four years of hockey for the University of Vermont. He is from Stratham NH, but spends his off seasons in Burlington. Jonathan was an entrepreneurship major in the CDAE program at Vermont. The Catamounts reached the frozen four for the second time in history his junior year and reached the first round of the NCAA tournament his senior year. Since college he has played for several Professional teams including the Cincinnati Cyclones, the Knoxville Ice Bears, and most recently the Alaska Aces of the East Coast Hockey League. Jonathan recently completed a 6 week rehab following a left shoulder labral repair. He took a few minutes before headed back to play to answer a few questions about his experience at Poulin Performance.
What type of injury did you suffer? I suffered a torn labrum in my left shoulder from a number of dislocations. Where are you currently playing professional hockey? I was playing for the Alaska Aces when the injury happened. How did you get referred to Poulin Performance? The UVM Men’s Hockey coach, Kevin Sneddon referred me to Poulin Performance. Have you had to perform any other rehabilitation during your hockey career? If so how was your experience at Poulin Performance different? I have done rehab on the same shoulder several different times. What set Poulin
Performance apart from the other physical therapy clinics was their undivided
attention to me for the full allotted time I was scheduled for. Rehab can be a
monotonous, painful, and frustrating process and having someone take you through
that process makes it not only easier, but more efficient. I wasn’t just
instructed to bomb through a list of PT exercises and report back once I was
finished. My physical therapist was right there making sure my posture and
positioning was executed properly throughout my exercise. What are your plans for the future as far as hockey goes? Pending a good doctor’s appointment I plan to hook up with a team for the remainder of this season. As far as next year, I would hope to be heading back to Alaska to play for the Aces. Would you recommend coming to Poulin Performance for Rehabilitation, and why? I would absolutely recommend rehabilitation at Poulin Performance because of their
attention to detail. I have tried rehabbing my shoulder by myself and it’s just
not enough. It doesn’t do you any good to work hard if you are working in the
wrong direction. Poulin emphasises Postural Restoration which is something we,
(a group of UVM alumni still playing) have tried to incorporate into our summer
training, but have never been successful. The important movements and
strengthening exercises are to precise and fine tuned to do without the guidance
from someone trained in that area. Poulin emphasised PR every step of the way
during my rehabilitation and that has helped my shoulder regain its strength and
flexibility. I plan to take postural restoration very seriously in the rest of
my training as an athlete. -- Jonathan Higgins
